Moray Firth Radio - popularly known as MFR - was launched as an Independent Community Radio Station on 23rd February 1982. Based in Inverness it broadcasts to an area around the coast of the Moray Firth, from Fraserburgh in the east and around the coast to Thurso in the north and as far south as Aviemore.
In the 1980s–1990s Moray Firth Radio won at least 6 major UK industry Sony Radio Awards / Radio Academy Awards:
1989 – Best Sequence Programming for Morning Call
1990 – Best Sequence Programming for Morning Call
1996 and again in 1997 – Local Station of the Year
1998 – Station of the Year (up to 1 million listeners)
1999 – Local Station of the Year (the fourth year in a row).
